Hair Transplant Cost per Graft: US, UK, Turkey and China

Published

A hair transplant quote is usually a graft count multiplied by a price, and both numbers can move. Patients often find the final bill differs from the first estimate once the surgeon sees how many grafts the donor area can give.

In one line

US clinics charge about USD 5–10 per FUE graft, UK clinics average about GBP 3.25 per graft, and Turkish packages run EUR 2,000–5,000 all in; in China, where clinics price per follicular unit, patients report paying a median of about CNY 11,900 (≈ USD 1,800) for a whole procedure.

Units differ between countries (per graft, per follicular unit, per hair, per session) and cannot be converted one to one. On the surgery price, China usually costs less than an Istanbul package, which does include a hotel and transfers, and China also lets you combine the transplant with a checkup and TCM on one trip.

I was quoted for 3000-3500 grafts which would have come to $8000 AUD roughly. I paid the deposit ($2000 AUD) based off this. Once they worked out my new graft total, the total cost came to $5500 AUD.

Below are the published per-graft prices in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Turkey and China, why the units do not line up, and what to check in a quote.

How much does a hair transplant cost?

In the US a hair transplant typically costs USD 6,000–15,000 or more, according to financing data from partner clinics (Q1 2026), with city averages from about USD 7,000 to USD 15,000. In the UK, a clinic's survey of 104 UK clinics found an average of GBP 4,820 for 1,500 grafts, with a range of GBP 1,995–15,000 (2025–26). The NHS says a hair transplant in the UK can cost anywhere between GBP 1,000 and GBP 30,000, and it is not available on the NHS because it is cosmetic. In Australia, Medicare does not cover it either. The published per-graft fees of five Australian surgeons ranged from AUD 5.00 to AUD 7.22 (2024), or about AUD 12,500–18,058 for 2,500 grafts. In Canada, Toronto clinics quote about CAD 8,500–16,000 for 2,500–3,000 grafts (2026).

In Turkey, all-inclusive packages usually cost EUR 2,000–5,000 (2026), including a hotel and airport transfers. In China, patients report paying a median of about CNY 11,900 (≈ USD 1,800) for a whole procedure, mostly 2,000–3,999 follicular units, or roughly CNY 4–7 (≈ USD 1) per unit (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26); your own quote depends on the clinic and the surgeon's grade.

Is a hair transplant priced per graft or as a flat fee?

Most clinics price per graft, some use a flat price for a range of grafts, and Turkish clinics usually sell a package where the graft count is set by your donor area rather than by the price tier. The IAHRS surgeon directory puts FUE at USD 5–10 per graft in the US and Canada, with an average of USD 7–8; for example, 1,500 FUE grafts cost about USD 10,500–12,000. FUT (strip) is cheaper, averaging USD 4–5 per graft.

Ask whether the final bill follows the estimate or the number of grafts actually taken. The count is only confirmed on the day of surgery, so the total can go down as well as up, as the Australian patient above found. Some clinics also ask before surgery whether they may take more grafts than estimated, so agree a limit in advance.

Chinese prices use different units. Chinese chains charge per follicular unit, usually one to four hairs. One Chinese public hospital lists its price per single hair, CNY 22.5 (≈ USD 3) per hair (2021), which is far more per graft than it looks. Under a 2025 national pricing guideline, Shanghai defines one hair-transplant session as a base of 100 follicular units, with extra units charged on top. Prices for aesthetic surgery in China are set by each hospital, so one list is not a national price.

A graft is also not the same as a hair. A patient in Canada described why that matters when comparing quotes.

I think they be being told the total number of hairs, not grafts … FUE grafts have an average of 2.0 - 2.5 hairs per graft … I got one done here in Canada and it took ten hours to do 2100.

What does the price of a hair transplant include?

Ask for a written list: the price should say whether it covers the consultation, blood tests, anaesthetic, medicines, aftercare products and any follow-up, and what happens if more or fewer grafts are taken. One large Istanbul clinic's 2026 packages, for example, include the consultation, pre-operative blood tests, PRP, an aftercare pack, 2–3 hotel nights and transfers, but exclude flights, most meals, travel insurance and second sessions.

Travel costs add up too. A patient who went to Turkey put the real total like this.

Paid 3500usd for 1900 grafts inc. hotel stay/transfer to and from in turkey. But if you take into consideration the plane ticket, it was around 5k all in.

What a hair transplant quote should tell you

  • The estimated graft count and the price per graft, unit or package
  • Whether the price unit is a graft, a follicular unit or a single hair
  • What happens to the price if more or fewer grafts are taken
  • Whether consultation, blood tests, anaesthetic and medicines are included
  • Whether PRP, aftercare products and follow-up are included
  • Whether hotel nights and transfers are included, and how many
  • The deposit, when the balance is due and the cancellation terms

How many grafts do you need, and what density can you expect?

The number depends on how much area you want to cover and how much your donor area can supply, which is why two clinics may quote very different counts. In the ISHRS 2025 practice census, the average first procedure was 2,347 grafts and a later procedure 1,637 grafts (2024 data). A transplant moves your own hair, so it cannot restore the density you had before hair loss.

Density also takes time. The NHS says new hair usually appears after about 4 months and the final result after 10–18 months. Transplanted hair often falls out a few weeks after surgery before it regrows.

Does a hair transplant leave scarring?

Every technique leaves some scarring, but how visible it is depends on the method and on how carefully grafts are taken. FUT removes a strip of scalp and leaves a line, with stitches removed after 10–14 days (NHS). FUE takes grafts one by one, so the small scars are spread over the donor area rather than in a line; it is now the main method, used in 85.4% of male procedures by ISHRS members (2024). The NHS lists small scars as a normal effect and noticeable scarring as a rarer risk.

Which country gives the best value for a hair transplant?

On the surgery price alone, China usually costs the least: patients in China report paying a median of about CNY 11,900 (≈ USD 1,800), against EUR 2,000–5,000 (about CNY 15,600–39,000 (≈ USD 2,350–5,800)) for a Turkish package. Turkish packages do bundle the hotel, transfers and aftercare into that price, so add a hotel and flights to the China figure before you compare. In the US, Canada and Australia, the same graft count often costs several times more.

China's other advantage is one trip that combines the transplant with a full health checkup and a traditional Chinese medicine consultation. For a one-morning health checkup, patients in China report paying a median of about CNY 1,500 (≈ USD 220) (commonly CNY 530–4,000 (≈ USD 79–600); premium packages about CNY 4,000 (≈ USD 600); Chinese patient reports, 2025–26), and some public TCM hospitals offer acupuncture and herbal preparations in the same department that does transplants. TCM is used alongside medical care, and how much it helps varies from person to person.

A hair transplant, a full health checkup and a TCM consultation in one trip

A hair transplant in China usually costs less than an Istanbul package.

In China, patients report paying a median of about CNY 11,900 (≈ USD 1,800) for a whole procedure, mostly 2,000–3,999 follicular units (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26), while Istanbul packages run EUR 2,390–5,790 (about CNY 18,600–45,000 (≈ USD 2,800–6,700)), although those include a hotel and transfers.

Your own quote depends on the clinic and the surgeon’s grade. China also adds the rest of the trip: the same visit can include a full health checkup at a public hospital and a TCM consultation.

In China, each clinic sets its own hair-transplant price, and what patients report paying works out at roughly CNY 4–7 (≈ USD 1) per follicular unit. Tell us about your hair and we quote all three together.
