Medical Trip to China Budget: Flights, Hotels, Food and Care
Published
“Price between the two was surprisingly similar once flight + accommodations were taken into account.”
In one line
Add flights, a room near the hospital for the whole stay, daily costs and any caregiver to the treatment price before you compare; for major surgery China often still comes out ahead, for small procedures the travel can cancel out the saving.
Hotel and caregiver figures are listings and a 2025 news report, for scale only. Flight prices change by route and season, so price your own dates with a changeable ticket.
That is the right way to think about it. The treatment price is only one line of the budget, and the other lines (flights, nights near the hospital, food, local transport and help after surgery) decide whether the trip makes sense. This guide sets out each cost, what is known about it, and how to compare China fairly with closer destinations.
What does a medical trip to China cost beyond the treatment?
Expect five extra costs: return flights, a room near the hospital for every night including the follow-up check, meals and local transport, a caregiver or companion if you will need help, and small payment fees.
Near a major Beijing hospital, booking-site listings have shown budget hotels at about USD 86 a night and international chain hotels at about USD 138–150. An apartment near a major Shanghai hospital was listed at about CNY 400 (≈ USD 60) a night. A one-to-one, 24-hour caregiver costs about CNY 300–330 (≈ USD 45–49) a day in China's first-tier cities, according to a 2025 Workers' Daily report.
The hospital bill depends on where you are seen. In a standard department, foreign patients pay the same listed price as local patients without insurance. International departments cost more: patients report about CNY 800–1,200 (≈ USD 120–180) for a consultation there, against roughly CNY 50 (≈ USD 7) for a standard appointment (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26).
Payment itself costs a little. A foreign card linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay works for payments of up to USD 5,000 each, and payments above CNY 200 (≈ USD 30) carry a fee of about 3%, so check the app. Your card issuer may add its own currency fee. If you bring cash, amounts above CNY 20,000 (≈ USD 3,000), or foreign currency worth more than USD 5,000, must be declared to customs.

How much does a flight to China cost?
There is no single figure: fares change with your departure city, the season and how flexible the ticket is, so price your own dates and choose a ticket you can change.
A changeable fare costs more up front, but it is the better buy for a medical trip. The date you can fly home depends on how you heal, and your surgeon may ask you to stay for an extra check. Fly into the city where you will be treated if you can, because a domestic connection adds a day and another airport after surgery.
Allow for the journey itself. From North America or Europe it is a long-haul flight with a large time difference, and many people need a few days to adjust before tests or surgery.
“with the 12-hour time difference in a 25 hour flight you're going to feel like crap for about 3 days before you adjust. so I don't think you're just going to jump off the plane get an MRI and come back home.”
How does the total compare with Turkey, Korea or Thailand?
For major surgery, China's lower treatment price usually leaves room for the longer trip; for smaller procedures, a closer destination can come out level once flights and hotels are added.
Take a hip replacement. Patients in China report paying a median of CNY 34,650 (≈ USD 5,150) before insurance (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26), while hospitals and agencies advertise hip replacement in Turkey at about EUR 9,100–16,900. The gap is larger than the cost of a long-haul flight and a few weeks near the hospital.
For a hair transplant the picture is closer. Istanbul packages are advertised at about EUR 2,390–5,790 including hotel and transfers, while patients in China report a median of CNY 11,900 (≈ USD 1,800) for the procedure alone. From the UK or Europe, Turkey is also a much shorter flight. For rhinoplasty, prices in Korea and China are broadly similar, so the deciding factors are the surgeon, the timing and whether you want to combine the trip with a health check or other care.
Treatment price before travel costs
| Treatment | China | Other destination | What to add for China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hip replacement (one side) | Median CNY 34,650 (≈ USD 5,150) (patient reports, 2025–26) | Turkey EUR 9,100–16,900 (advertised) | Long-haul flights and a stay until your surgeon clears you to fly |
| Hair transplant | Median CNY 11,900 (≈ USD 1,800) (patient reports, 2025–26) | Istanbul EUR 2,390–5,790 incl. hotel and transfers (advertised) | Flights and a few nights' hotel |
| Rhinoplasty (first time) | Median CNY 29,000 (≈ USD 4,350) (patient reports, 2025–26) | Korea KRW 4–7.5 million (advertised) | Flights and a stay near the clinic for follow-up checks |
Should the consultation and the treatment be on separate trips?
Usually not for a single treatment, if the hospital can review your reports and scans before you travel and confirm the plan, dates and price in writing.
A second trip is sometimes built into the treatment. Dental implants are the common example: the American Academy of Implant Dentistry says the whole implant process can take three to nine months, so many people plan the implant and the final teeth as separate visits. Ask the dentist whether faster options suit you and how many trips they expect before you book anything.
If you are combining several procedures, put the one with the longest recovery first, so its follow-up check falls before you fly home.
How do you prepare for a long-haul flight after surgery?
Get your surgeon's written confirmation that you are fit to fly, book an aisle seat, wear compression stockings and walk the aisle during the flight.
Official advice varies by operation. The UK Civil Aviation Authority advises avoiding flights for 10 days after abdominal surgery and for about 24 hours after a colonoscopy. Airline clearance rules based on the IATA Medical Manual accept cataract and laser eye surgery after 24 hours. One NHS orthopaedic hospital advises waiting 3 months after a hip or knee replacement before flights longer than 4 hours. These differ a lot, and the decision belongs to your surgeon.
On flights of four hours or more, wearing below-knee compression stockings reduced symptomless leg clots from about 10 in 1,000 to about 1 in 1,000 in lower-risk travellers, in trials summarised by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Request wheelchair assistance when you book if long walks through the airport will be hard, and carry the fit-to-fly note.
“They then said I needed a fit to fly signed digital note from my surgeon which I didn't have. Luckily my surgeon was quick to send one over on whatsapp and they were fine to let me go on. Maybe get one from your surgeon just in case you need it at the airport.”
How long to stay, where to stay and when you can fly home
Most of the planning comes down to one date: when your surgeon says you are fit to fly. Official guidance ranges from 24 hours after a colonoscopy or cataract surgery to about 10 days after abdominal surgery, longer after a joint replacement. Here is how to plan the stay around it.
