Spine surgery in China

Disc and spinal fusion surgery at a Chinese public hospital, after national implant price cuts

For people in the US, UK, Canada and Australia facing a long wait or a five-figure bill for a discectomy or spinal fusion. China’s 2022 national procurement of spinal implants cut their average price by 84%, and a standard lumbar fusion implant set fell from about CNY 33,000 (≈ USD 4,950) to about CNY 4,500 (≈ USD 670). Patients in China report total bills before insurance of about CNY 53,500 (≈ USD 8,000) for a lumbar fusion and CNY 23,250 (≈ USD 3,450) for an endoscopic or minimally invasive operation (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26). Foreign patients pay the full price without Chinese insurance and there is no separate official price for them, so every quote is individual.

United States

A hospital cash price is only part of the bill

Price-transparency data put the average hospital cash price at USD 11,047 for a lumbar discectomy and USD 19,081 for a spinal fusion (May 2026), with a very wide spread between hospitals. These are facility prices: the surgeon and anaesthetist usually bill separately. Before you compare anything, ask what the price leaves out.

United Kingdom

A long list, or about GBP 10,000 and up privately

Spinal surgery in England is counted inside trauma and orthopaedics, where only 60.9% of patients had waited under 18 weeks in June 2026, against a 92% standard. Privately, a microdiscectomy costs from GBP 10,123 to GBP 11,245 at two hospitals including the surgeon, and a spinal fusion in London from GBP 17,300 for hospital charges alone (2026).

Canada & Australia

Long specialist waits, or a large hospital bill

In the Fraser Institute’s 2025 survey, neurosurgery (49.9 weeks) and orthopaedic surgery (48.6 weeks) had the longest median waits from GP referral to treatment in Canada, and we found no published private spine surgery price. In Australia, the hospital admission alone for a spinal fusion costs AUD 40,840–57,214 before doctors’ fees (Medibank claims, 2023–24).

Why China

Advanced spine surgery, at a mid-range price

China performed about 1.2 million spinal operations in 2021. In its 2022 national procurement of spinal implants, covering fusion systems, endoscopic discectomy and artificial disc replacement, the average price fell by 84%. A standard lumbar fusion set fell from about CNY 33,000 (≈ USD 4,950) to CNY 4,500 (≈ USD 670), and well-known foreign brands from about CNY 60,000 (≈ USD 8,950) to CNY 4,800 (≈ USD 720).

Minimally invasive, same fee

Endoscopic disc surgery is not charged extra in Shanghai

Shanghai’s official fee schedule caps the surgeon’s fee for removing a disc at CNY 3,139 (≈ USD 470) per disc at tertiary hospitals, and states that endoscopic disc surgery is charged at the same price as open surgery, with no separate fee for the endoscope. A lumbar decompression with fusion is capped at CNY 5,571–6,686 (≈ USD 830–1,000). Implants, anaesthesia, the bed and drugs are charged on top, and as a foreign patient you pay the full price without Chinese insurance.

Plan for the recovery

Leaving hospital is not the same as flying home

Advice on flying after spine surgery differs. One UK private hospital advises waiting 12 weeks before a long-haul flight after a lumbar fusion, while a Turkish hospital that treats international patients says patients are usually cleared to fly 10–14 days after a fusion, after a fitness-to-fly check. We found no published flying advice for a microdiscectomy. Your surgeon decides your flight date, with blood-clot precautions, and we plan the stay around it.

We handle the China part

How a spine surgery trip to China works

  1. 1

    1. Send your MRI and history from home

Upload your MRI or CT, the reports and a list of your conditions, treatments so far and medicines. A Chinese spine surgeon reviews them, and we send you an individual quote with what it includes.

  2. 2

    2. Consultation and tests in China

The surgeon examines you, may repeat scans, confirms whether surgery is right for you and settles the approach, open or endoscopic, and the implant.

  3. 3

    3. Surgery and hospital stay

At one Chinese tertiary hospital the median stay after spinal surgery was 7 days. A microdiscectomy in the NHS is often a day case or an overnight stay.

  4. 4

    4. Recovery before you fly

Your flight date is agreed with the surgeon in advance, with blood-clot precautions, and you leave with your scans and records in English for your own doctor.

Common questions

How much does spinal fusion surgery cost?

It depends on the country and on what the price covers. In the US, the average hospital cash price is about USD 19,081, facility only (price-transparency data, May 2026). A London hospital lists a fusion from GBP 17,300 for hospital charges alone, and in Australia the hospital admission costs AUD 40,840–57,214 before doctors’ fees (Medibank, 2023–24). Abroad, broker listings show USD 11,500–15,500 for a single-level lumbar fusion in Tijuana and USD 5,500–7,800 in India, while Bangkok Hospital lists THB 592,000–640,000 without implants or specialist fees. In China, patients report paying about CNY 53,500 (≈ USD 8,000) for a lumbar fusion before insurance, from a small sample (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26). That is below the Tijuana and Bangkok prices and slightly above the Indian range. At a standard department, foreign patients pay the same listed price as local patients who pay without insurance, but your own quote depends on the hospital and the department. Always ask whether the implant, surgeon and anaesthetist are included.

How much does minimally invasive spine surgery cost?

Published examples: an endoscopic discectomy at one level costs THB 402,000 at Bangkok Hospital, excluding specialist fees and implants, and THB 340,000 at Bumrungrad (hospital packages). In Istanbul, broker listings show about USD 4,510 for an endoscopic discectomy. In China, patients report paying about CNY 23,250 (≈ USD 3,450) for an endoscopic or minimally invasive operation before insurance (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26), level with or below the Istanbul listings. In Shanghai, the official fee schedule charges endoscopic disc surgery at the same surgeon’s fee as open surgery, capped at CNY 3,139 (≈ USD 470) per disc at tertiary hospitals, and endoscopic discectomy implants were included in China’s 2022 national procurement.

How much does spine surgery cost in China?

How long is the recovery after a microdiscectomy?

NHS hospitals describe it as a day case or an overnight stay of up to three days. Most people return to work in 2–6 weeks depending on how physical the job is, and heavy manual work can take 6–12 weeks. Driving is usually possible after 2–4 weeks. Ask your surgeon about flying, because we found no published flying advice for a microdiscectomy.
