For people in China, implants used to be one of the most expensive things a dentist could suggest. A patient in Shanghai summed up how that has changed.
In one line
China's 2023 national procurement cut implant system prices by about 55% and capped the service fee, and patients in China now report paying a median of about CNY 6,000 (≈ USD 900) for one implant with crown, which gives foreign patients a clear framework to check any quote against.
At a standard department, foreign patients pay the same listed price as local patients who pay without insurance; international departments charge more. Bone grafts, premium brands and full-arch work cost more, and implants still need two trips.
I have two implants, and it took more than a year in total, because there were so many steps and I had to go back every few months… The good news is that most of it is now under the national procurement, so it's much cheaper than a few years ago.
This article explains what the reform did, which parts of the price it covers, what a foreign patient should expect to pay, and how to check a clinic before you travel.
How much do dental implants cost in China compared with the US?
Patients in China report paying a median of about CNY 6,000 (≈ USD 900) for one implant with abutment and crown, across 80 reports (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26), compared with a typical USD 3,000–7,000 in the US. These reports all date from after the 2023 national reforms, which cut implant system prices by about 55% and capped the service fee. The US range is from a 2024–25 cost guide, and private UK practices typically charge GBP 2,000–3,000 (TreatCompare survey, 2026).
Brand and hospital change the Chinese price a lot. Patients report all-in prices from about CNY 2,600 (≈ USD 390) to CNY 16,800 (≈ USD 2,500) per tooth, with medians near CNY 8,250 (≈ USD 1,250) at public hospitals and CNY 6,000 (≈ USD 900) at private clinics, and top hospitals in Beijing and Shanghai have quoted CNY 10,000–13,000 (≈ USD 1,500–1,950) for a premium Swiss implant (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26).
Two cautions. Foreign visitors are not covered by Chinese medical insurance, so the prices patients report paying before insurance are the right guide, and international or VIP departments charge considerably more. China is also not the cheapest headline price for implants: broker guides list EUR 450–900 in Istanbul (2026).
How much does dental treatment in China cost, and what did the reform change?
After the reform, a public-hospital implant is priced in three parts: the implant system, the crown and a medical service fee. In 2023 the state pooled the demand of about 18,000 institutions and asked manufacturers to bid for guaranteed volume. The tender, led by Sichuan under the National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA), opened on 11 January 2023, according to China News Service.

- The implant system. The average winning price was just over CNY 900 (≈ USD 130), a 55% cut from the pre-procurement median, with winning bids from CNY 550 (≈ USD 82) to CNY 1,850 (≈ USD 280). Premium brands such as Straumann, Dentsply and Nobel fell from about CNY 5,000 (≈ USD 750) to about CNY 1,850 (≈ USD 280).
- The crown. Crowns were listed separately at CNY 100–660 (≈ USD 15–99), with an average of about CNY 330 (≈ USD 49) (Xinhua, 2023).
- The service fee. The NHSA set a target cap of CNY 4,500 (≈ USD 670) per tooth at tertiary public hospitals, covering examination, implant placement and crown fitting. Some provinces set a slightly lower cap, and an agency guide reports CNY 5,150 (≈ USD 770) per tooth in Shanghai (2026), excluding the implant.
Bone grafts, sinus lifts, extractions and complex cases such as full-arch work are priced on top or case by case. Chinese media reported in October 2026 that a second round of implant procurement has been launched, but no new prices had been published at the time of writing.
How good is dental care in China?
There is no reliable data that ranks dental quality between countries, so the honest answer is that it depends on the dentist and the setting, as it does at home. What can be said is that implants are a high-volume treatment in China, with roughly 4 million placed each year (China News Service, 2023), and that public hospitals place them in dedicated stomatology departments with CT imaging on site. One visitor described a routine visit to a public hospital dental department.
It was a large room with about 10-15 dental chairs, separated only by curtains. Everything looked very clean and quite modern. The doctor was waiting for us at the last chair. She spoke a little English, checked my tooth, and said I needed an X-ray… The entire process was very smooth and easy.
Rather than relying on reputation, check the things you can verify: the dentist's qualifications and how many implants they place, which implant system they use and whether it is recognised at home, whether a CT scan is part of the plan, and what follow-up is offered after you leave.
Can dental implants be done in China during a short visit?
Not completely. The implant has to fuse with the bone for about 3–6 months before the final crown, so the usual pattern is two trips: one of 3–7 days for surgery and one of 4–7 days for the crown, according to clinic trip-planning guides. Be careful with any offer that promises a finished implant in a single short stay.
An implant and crown is a fairly long process, up to 6 months in some cases, start to finish, involving regular visits with your dentist (if they're a serious professional).
Mexico is much closer for most Americans, and that matters when two trips are needed. For a single implant, the saving in China has to be weighed against two long-haul flights.
How do you find a dental clinic in China as a foreign patient, and will the dentist speak English?
English is not guaranteed, especially in public hospitals. Patients in China describe booking through a hospital's phone app or mini-program with a Chinese ID card, specialist slots at well-known hospitals that are hard to get, and waits of up to three hours on the day. Private clinics are usually easier to book, but Chinese patients themselves warn about very low advertised prices followed by add-ons. For the steps around booking, see how to plan a medical trip to China.
Public or private is a real choice. Chinese patients who post about implants generally say public hospitals are harder to get into, while private clinics are more convenient, and some offer the first consultation and scan free. In patient reports, private clinics were often cheaper, with a median of about CNY 6,000 (≈ USD 900) against CNY 8,250 (≈ USD 1,250) at public hospitals. The fee caps described above are set for public hospitals, so check a private quote line by line. Neither route is automatically better, which is why the quote itself matters more than the label.
How to read a Chinese implant quote
- 1
Find the implant brand and system
Check which procurement price band it sits in, and whether dentists at home can service it.
- 2
Check the crown line
Note the material and whether it is the standard crown or an upgrade.
- 3
Check the service fee
Compare it with the cap for that city or province.
- 4
Look for extras
CT scan, extraction, bone graft or sinus lift should be listed as separate lines.
- 5
Confirm the total and the visits
One total per tooth, the dates of both trips, and what follow-up is included.
Whichever route you take, ask for a written, itemised quote in English before you book flights, and compare each line with the official figures above.
Dental implants in a large Chinese hospital, at local prices
For people in the US, UK, Canada and Australia who are priced out of implants at home or cannot get a dentist at all.
Since China’s 2023 national implant price reform, implant prices are set by national tenders, and patients in China report paying about CNY 6,000 (≈ USD 900) in total for a single implant (median). Get an itemised quote before you decide anything.
