For many people the hardest part of a colonoscopy is not the procedure but the weeks before it. One woman in the UK, referred for a colonoscopy after routine NHS bowel screening, described the wait like this.
In one line
In England 30.8% of people on the colonoscopy list had waited six weeks or more in July 2026; in China there is no official wait statistic, but patients often describe a procedure within days once the consultation and assessment are done.
Best for planned screening or surveillance. If you have symptoms such as bleeding, a change in bowel habit or weight loss, ask your GP about the urgent pathway at home first. In China, book ahead and allow several days for consultation, prep and the procedure.
I did the nhs routine screening as I am over 50 and they said I needed a colonoscopy… I've been waiting 2 weeks and still have another to go before the colonoscopy and then no doubt wait for results. The waiting is just awful.
This guide covers how long the wait is in the UK and elsewhere, how long the prep and the procedure take, when results arrive, and what is and is not known about timing in China.
How long is the wait for a colonoscopy on the NHS?
Many NHS patients wait more than six weeks. According to NHS England's diagnostic waiting time statistics for July 2026, 79,510 people were on the colonoscopy waiting list and 30.8% of them had been waiting six weeks or longer. Gastroscopy (29.0%) and flexible sigmoidoscopy (32.1%) were similar. Across all 15 key diagnostic tests, 23.1% had waited six weeks or more, while the NHS standard is under 1%.
How long you personally wait depends a great deal on why you were referred. People on the urgent suspected cancer pathway are often seen quickly, and several patients describe a colonoscopy within a couple of weeks of seeing their GP. Routine and surveillance referrals tend to wait longer, and sometimes the longest wait is to see a specialist before the test is even booked.
The NHS referral was sent through as urgent as the results from a stool sample I did were very concerning but just to be referred to see a gastroenterologist wait time was 26 weeks… I was so poorly and simply could not wait 26 weeks just to see a doc.
Outside England the picture is patchy. In Canada, the Fraser Institute's 2025 Waiting Your Turn report put the median wait from GP referral to treatment at 28.6 weeks across all specialties, but it does not give a separate colonoscopy figure. We did not find national colonoscopy wait statistics for Australia. In the US the barrier is usually the bill rather than a queue.
Colonoscopy waits: what the published data shows
| Where | Wait data | Source |
|---|---|---|
| China | No official statistic; patient reports range from the next day to about a month | Patient reports, 2026 |
| England (NHS) | 30.8% waiting 6+ weeks; 79,510 on the colonoscopy list | NHS England diagnostic waiting times, July 2026 |
| Canada | Median 28.6 weeks from GP referral to treatment, all specialties; no colonoscopy figure | Fraser Institute, 2025 |
| Australia | No national colonoscopy wait figure found | None found |
| USA | No national queue figure; cost and billing are the usual barrier | None found |
Symptoms first: If you have bleeding, a change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss or anaemia, speak to your doctor at home about the urgent route before planning any trip. Travel suits planned screening and surveillance, not a worrying symptom that needs prompt local care.
How long does a colonoscopy take, and when do you get the results?
The procedure itself is usually short, and most of the day goes on checking in, sedation and recovery. You are normally told what the doctor saw before you leave, often with photos in the written report. If a polyp was removed or a biopsy taken, the pathology result comes later, after a further wait that your hospital will tell you about.
Patients in China describe the same pattern: the endoscopy findings are explained once you are awake, and pathology on any removed tissue follows. If you add a wider health checkup, the full report can take longer. Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, for example, says its paper checkup report takes 7–8 working days, with a copy also sent by WeChat. If you are travelling, ask before you book how the pathology result will reach you once you are home.
How long does the bowel prep take, and when should you stop eating?
Bowel prep usually starts a few days before the procedure with a low-fibre diet, moves to clear liquids the day before, and ends with the laxative drink taken in one or two doses. The exact timing differs between hospitals and prep products, so follow the instructions your own hospital gives you rather than a schedule you read online.
The laxative works within hours, and the frequent trips to the bathroom usually ease by the time of the procedure. For a trip abroad this matters in a practical way: you need to arrive before the diet changes begin, and a room close to the hospital with a private bathroom makes the prep day much easier. A poor prep can mean the procedure has to be repeated, so it is worth getting right.
How long does a colonoscopy take with sedation, and how long does it last?
Sedation adds little to the procedure time but affects the rest of your day. Most people wake within minutes of the scope coming out and rest in recovery before going home. Judgement and reaction times stay affected for some hours, which is why hospitals ask you to have someone with you afterwards and not to drive, sign important documents or travel alone that day. Your hospital will tell you exactly how long these restrictions apply.
In China the sedated version is often called a "painless" colonoscopy, and the sedation is given by an anaesthetist. Patients in China report paying a median of about CNY 500 (≈ USD 75) for the sedation and about CNY 1,500 (≈ USD 220) for a sedated gastroscopy and colonoscopy in total, before insurance (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26). At a standard department, foreign patients pay the same listed price as local patients who pay without insurance; international departments charge more.
Can you get a colonoscopy without a doctor's referral?
It depends on the country. On the NHS you need a GP referral or an invitation through the screening programme. Privately in the UK you can usually book a consultation with a gastroenterologist, who then decides whether a colonoscopy is the right test. In the US, whether you need a referral depends on your plan.
Chinese public hospitals do not use a GP gatekeeper, so you can book an outpatient appointment in the gastroenterology department yourself. A sedated colonoscopy still needs that consultation and a pre-anaesthesia assessment first, usually with blood tests and an ECG. Bring a list of your medicines, especially blood thinners, and any previous colonoscopy reports.
How long is the wait for a colonoscopy in China?
There is no official statistic for colonoscopy waits in Chinese hospitals, so we do not quote one. What patients in China report varies by hospital and season. One woman in Shaanxi described a morning of tests, then the assessment and booking, with the sedated procedure the next day at the earliest.
The tests beforehand take a whole morning. Once the results are out you go for the assessment and booking, and the earliest you can get the painless gastroscopy and colonoscopy is the next day.
Others report much longer waits at busy hospitals.
How long does it take to get a painless gastroscopy and colonoscopy booked these days? A couple of years ago my mum waited a month for a painless colonoscopy.
The honest planning advice is to book the consultation and procedure dates before you travel, allow several days in the city for the consultation, the prep and the procedure, and keep a spare day in case the prep needs repeating. Do not assume that a walk-in, same-day colonoscopy will be available.
Before you book a colonoscopy trip
- Ask your home doctor whether your symptoms need the urgent pathway at home instead
- Gather your previous colonoscopy and pathology reports and a list of your medicines
- Ask the hospital which days the consultation, assessment and procedure can be booked
- Check how the prep instructions will be given to you and in which language
- Plan for someone to accompany you on the day of a sedated procedure
- Ask how and when pathology results will be sent to you after you fly home
- Keep one spare day in case the prep is not clear enough and needs repeating
Waiting for a colonoscopy? Book one in China with the date confirmed before you fly
For people facing a long wait for a planned screening or surveillance colonoscopy. In England, 30.8% of the 79,510 people on the colonoscopy waiting list had waited six weeks or more in July 2026.
Patients in China report paying about CNY 1,500 (≈ USD 220) all-in for a sedated gastroscopy and colonoscopy without polyp removal (median), and about CNY 2,850 (≈ USD 430) when polyps are removed on the spot.
There is no official waiting-time statistic for China, so we confirm your dates with the hospital before you book flights.
