When people start IVF, friends and forums quickly hand them a list of extras: acupuncture, yoga, special foods. Many try at least one. One patient summed up why she kept going to acupuncture.
In one line
Many people in China use acupuncture and gentle exercise alongside IVF for comfort and calm, and a trip to China can fit IVF, a health checkup and TCM care into one stay, but none of these is a way to raise your chance of pregnancy.
IVF in China is open only to legally married man-and-woman couples. Acupuncture, herbs and yoga are used alongside medical treatment, not instead of it, and anything you take or do during a cycle should be cleared with your fertility doctor.
“I did acupuncture pre and post transfer for my FETs. I really feel like at the very least it helps me relax!”
This guide covers how acupuncture is used alongside IVF in China, what traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) looks for, whether fertility yoga is safe at each stage, and how one trip can combine IVF with a health checkup and TCM care. It does not promise that any of these improves the result of IVF. We do not make that claim.
Does acupuncture help during IVF?
No one can promise that acupuncture raises your chance of pregnancy, and we do not claim it does; many people in China use it alongside IVF, mainly for relaxation, sleep and coping with treatment.
How it is done in China. TCM is part of everyday hospital care in China. The country had 6,397 TCM hospitals and 1.68 billion TCM visits in 2024, according to the National Health Commission's statistical bulletin. A TCM doctor may use acupuncture, moxibustion (warming points with burning mugwort), tui na massage, cupping or herbal medicine. Acupuncture is usually given in a series of sessions, often once or twice a week over several weeks, and the doctor sets the frequency. Patients in China report paying a median of about CNY 100 (≈ USD 15) a session without insurance, and up to about CNY 300 (≈ USD 45) with a sought-after doctor (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26). In the US a session typically costs USD 75–200 (GoodRx, 2025–26) and in the UK GBP 20–80 (a UK practitioner body's fee guide).
Acupuncture price per session
| Where | Typical price | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| USA | USD 75–200 | GoodRx cost guide, 2025–26 |
| UK | GBP 20–80 | Practitioner body fee guide, current |
| Australia | AUD 60–120 (metro 70–150) | Cost guide, 2026 |
| China | About CNY 100 (≈ USD 15) median without insurance; up to about CNY 300 (≈ USD 45) | Chinese patient reports, 2025–26 |
How TCM looks at it. TCM works by pattern differentiation. Two women with the same diagnosis may be given different plans, because the doctor reads each person's constitution from the tongue, the pulse, sleep, digestion and the menstrual history. That is why a TCM consultation starts with questions and an examination rather than a fixed fertility protocol. Herbal medicine during stimulation or around transfer should only be used if your IVF doctor knows exactly what is in it and agrees.
What patients describe. Experiences vary widely, and people are often frank about it.
“I tried a lot of things: uterine infusions, hot herbal compresses, infrared heat, acupuncture, microwave therapy, magnet therapy, Chinese herbs, protein powder, durian, working out… in the end I found that hMG injections were what helped me.”
What to expect. Responses differ from person to person. In China, TCM is used alongside medical treatment, and it does not replace the fertility team's plan, medication or monitoring.
Is fertility yoga safe during IVF stimulation and after transfer?
Gentle yoga is something many people continue during IVF, but ask your fertility clinic first, and take particular care during stimulation and after transfer.
During stimulation the ovaries grow larger, so clinics commonly advise against vigorous exercise, deep twists and strong core work at that stage. Walking, breathing exercises and slow stretching are what many people keep up. After egg collection, wait until the clinic says you can exercise again. After a transfer, follow your clinic's advice on activity.
“Is this yoga with no inversions? I am doing ivf stimulation at the moment & would love to add this to my daily exercise of walking.”
When in the cycle can fertility yoga be done, including periods and ovulation?
Outside an IVF cycle, gentle yoga can generally be done at any point in the month, including during a period and around ovulation, adjusting intensity to how you feel.
Once IVF starts, the treatment calendar replaces the natural cycle. Stimulation, egg collection, transfer and the two-week wait each come with their own advice, so check with your clinic at each step rather than following a general fertility yoga plan.
How often should fertility yoga be practised?
There is no proven dose; most people treat it like any gentle exercise, a short session on most days, rather than as a treatment with a fixed number of sessions.
If yoga helps you feel calmer and sleep better, it is worth keeping. If a routine becomes another thing you feel anxious about missing, it is fine to drop it.
Can yoga or acupuncture raise a low AMH?
We know of no reliable evidence that yoga or acupuncture changes AMH, and we do not suggest either can.
AMH is a blood test that gives your doctor an idea of egg reserve and helps plan stimulation doses. If your AMH is low or high, your fertility doctor is the right person to explain what it means for you. Yoga and acupuncture can still be part of looking after yourself during treatment, just not as a way to change the number.
Can you combine IVF, a health checkup and TCM in one trip to China?
Yes, eligible couples can plan them as one stay, but IVF sets the calendar and the other two fit around it.
Eligibility comes first: in China, IVF is only open to legally married couples of a man and a woman, and hospitals confirm eligibility case by case. Patients in China report paying a median of CNY 33,000 (≈ USD 4,950) for one retrieval and one transfer, and about CNY 30,000–50,000 (≈ USD 4,500–7,450) without insurance (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26). At a standard department, foreign patients pay the same listed price as local patients who pay without insurance; international departments charge more.
Patients in China report paying a median of about CNY 1,500 (≈ USD 220) for a full health checkup (commonly CNY 530–4,000 (≈ USD 79–600)), and about CNY 4,000 (≈ USD 600) for a premium or VIP package (Chinese patient reports, 2025–26). Tell the checkup centre that you are in IVF treatment, because imaging that uses radiation, such as CT, has to be planned with your doctors. Partners often find it easier to do the full checkup. A TCM consultation at a Beijing tertiary public hospital costs CNY 50–100 (≈ USD 7–15) depending on the doctor's grade (2019 pricing reform), with treatments charged on top.
Planning IVF, a checkup and TCM in one stay
- Confirm IVF eligibility with the hospital first: passports and proof of marriage for both partners.
- Get the IVF timeline in writing, then fit the checkup and TCM visits into the gaps.
- Tell the checkup centre you are in IVF so imaging with radiation is planned with your doctors.
- Show your IVF doctor any herbal medicine before you take it.
- Check the visa route for the full length of your stay.
- Ask for checkup reports and IVF records in English to take home.
Note: Acupuncture and herbal medicine in China are charged per session or per item, on top of the consultation fee, and international departments charge more.
One stay in China: your IVF cycle, a health checkup and TCM care alongside it
An IVF cycle takes 3 to 6 weeks, according to the UK regulator, and both partners need to be there for part of it. The same stay can include a full health checkup and TCM consultations. Many people in China use acupuncture alongside IVF as supporting care; it does not replace your fertility treatment, and we make no promise that it changes the result.
