Why people look at China

Four reasons, and one more

Price

A routine dental implant at a Chinese public hospital costs about CNY 6,000–7,000 (≈ USD 900–1,050), against USD 3,000–7,000 in the US (cost guides, 2024–25). Prices for implants and joint prostheses are set through national tenders.

Time

In England, 23.1% of people waiting for one of 15 key diagnostic tests have waited more than six weeks (NHS England, Jul 2026). In Canada the median wait for an MRI is about 18 weeks (Fraser Institute, 2025). Chinese public-hospital checkup centres publish their packages and prices.

Insurance

About 27% of US adults have no dental insurance (CareQuest, 2024), and many plans cap or exclude implants, checkups and diagnostic tests. In China you pay the hospital’s published price yourself, so you know the cost up front.

Experience

Chinese public hospitals treat very large numbers of patients: around 4 million dental implants are placed in China each year (2023), and the country has 971,000 licensed TCM physicians (NHC, 2024).

And when nothing else fits: TCM

For long-running pain, poor sleep or fatigue that tests have not explained, Chinese hospitals use TCM alongside medical care. Results vary from person to person, and it does not replace seeing a doctor.

One trip, three things

Treatment, a full health checkup and a TCM consultation

If you are flying to China for one treatment, the same trip can include a full health checkup at a public hospital (packages from CNY 1,320 (≈ USD 200)) and a TCM consultation (from CNY 50 (≈ USD 7)). Each product page shows how this works for that treatment.

Common questions

Do foreign patients pay more in China?

Foreign patients pay the hospital’s full listed price, because Chinese health insurance covers local residents only. International departments charge more than the standard price list. The prices on this site are full self-pay prices unless they say otherwise.

Do I need a visa?

US, UK, Canadian and Australian citizens can use China’s 240-hour visa-free transit if they hold an onward ticket to a third country, enter through one of the designated ports and stay within the designated region for up to 10 days (National Immigration Administration, 2025). The official texts list tourism, business and family visits and do not mention medical treatment, so for longer stays or treatment-only trips, check the visa rules for your case before you book.

How do I check a hospital or doctor?

Ask for the hospital’s medical institution practice licence and the treating doctor’s practising certificate. For cosmetic surgery, Chinese rules require the lead surgeon to be a licensed doctor with at least six years in aesthetic or plastic surgery. Each product page lists what to check for that treatment.

Can I combine treatments in one trip?

Yes. A health checkup and a TCM consultation fit around most treatments. Recovery sets the limits: joint replacement needs a long stay before flying home, and implants need a second visit after the bone heals.
